Main challenges

Before Hiboo, Bylor faced several structural challenges:

1. Scattered and heterogeneous machine data

  • Multiple manufacturers and rental companies, each with its own telematics portal
  • Different formats, levels of detail, and data refresh frequencies
  • Data sometimes incomplete or hard to compare between sources

In this context, it was impossible to have a consolidated and reliable view of actual equipment usage.

2. Heavy, manual, and hard‑to‑scale reporting

  • Exports from several platforms, then reprocessing and consolidation in Excel
  • Very time‑consuming processes for the teams
  • Information rarely up to date and difficult to use for day‑to‑day decision‑making

3. Limited visibility on maintenance, carbon and sustainability

To address these challenges, Bylor selected Hiboo as the central machine‑data hub for the Hinkley Point C project.

  • Advanced geo‑fencing based on recent satellite imagery, to locate machines and track their presence in critical zones
  • Real‑time alerts (hours, zones, abnormal usage) so teams can focus on exceptions
  • Dashboards tailored to a wide range of users, from field teams to project management

1. Clear visibility on resource allocation

Bylor now has a unified view of actual equipment usage:

  • identification of under‑utilized and over‑used machines,
  • more accurate adjustment of owned and rented volumes,
  • stronger justification of requirements in discussions with EDF.

Teams no longer spend time consolidating data; they spend time analyzing and deciding.

2. End of manual reporting and time savings

The elimination of manual exports and reprocessing has freed up a significant amount of time:

  • automated reporting into internal tools,
  • more frequent updates of key indicators,
  • reduced risk of input and interpretation errors.

3. Stronger control over idle time, fuel and CO₂

Thanks to Hiboo’s monitoring, Bylor can:

  • track engine idle time trends and target the costliest situations,
  • better understand fuel consumption by asset segment,
  • rely on factual data to track CO₂ emissions and document the project’s environmental performance.

Work is also underway to more accurately measure the actual usage of electric equipment, especially MEWPs whose working position remains elevated even when the motor is off.

4. Simplified management of an ultra‑complex site

By focusing on a limited set of critical operational KPIs instead of a multitude of metrics, Bylor:

Bylor is a joint venture between Bouygues Travaux Publics and Laing O’Rourke, created to deliver the civil works for the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant in Somerset, United Kingdom. The JV is responsible for the design, construction and installation of the structures that will host the site’s two EPR reactors, helping provide the UK with low‑carbon electricity capable of powering several million homes.
