AC Excavator, the first equipment rental company to share environmental data from its machines on the Penly construction site.

AC Excavator, a Normandy-based specialist in heavy equipment rental with operators, connects its machines to Hiboo to centralize usage, consumption, and emissions data, and share it continuously with Eiffage as part of the preparatory earthworks for the Penly construction site.

Penly, an extraordinary construction site

The first project of France’s new nuclear program, Penly will host the first pair of EPR2 reactors, each with a capacity of around 1,670 MWe and a planned commissioning between 2035 and 2037.

The scale of the project is exceptional: it is the largest construction site in Europe in its field. Since its launch one year ago, 90 machines are already being monitored on Hiboo.

Today, the site mobilizes around 800 people per day. At peak activity, this workforce will increase tenfold to exceed 8,000 employees. More than 110 trades are involved, and the preparatory works have been entrusted to Eiffage.

The project also involves an exceptional technical challenge: reclaiming 1.5 km in length and 200 m in width from the sea to build the breakwater. To ensure the strength of this structure, 15,000 concrete blocks will need to be produced within a year and a half.

The project is overseen through a “Grand Chantier” framework led by the French government, with a dedicated coordinator. On site, the density of stakeholders is high, with around a dozen equipment rental companies involved. The ecosystem largely consists of local contractors, rental companies, and operators rooted in the region.

Main challenges

Establishing a carbon footprint involving numerous stakeholders on a construction site represents a real challenge, both for data collection and data utilization.

In its effort to facilitate the monitoring of site production and calculate the project’s carbon footprint, Eiffage requires its contractors to sign a commitment charter to share equipment data through a dedicated fleet management platform such as Hiboo.

"This data allows us to adjust our carbon budget by comparing what we are expected to emit with what has already been emitted."
Marine Tesson, Low-Carbon Project Manager, Eiffage Génie Civil.

Collecting consumption data from contractors on site is essential to reliably complete part of the carbon footprint assessment on construction sites.

It helps cover both:

  • Direct emissions (from rental equipment – scopes 1 and 2), and
  • Indirect emissions (from transport providers – upstream scope 3): a significant share of upstream scope 3 emissions comes from transport activities. It is therefore highly relevant for transport providers to also integrate these data collection and reporting platforms.

"As part of its carbon reduction objectives, the Eiffage Group relies on collecting site data to deliver projects that combine quality execution with a lower environmental impact. We therefore monitor all production equipment (dump trucks, excavators, bulldozers, etc.). To ensure reliable monitoring, all data must be reported daily: as soon as a piece of equipment is missing, the analysis becomes partial and loses relevance."
Marine Tesson, Low-Carbon Project Manager, Eiffage Génie Civil.

The Hiboo solution

AC Excavator chooses Hiboo: A pioneering innovation approach serving the Penly construction site

By choosing Hiboo, AC Excavator proactively decided to unify the connectivity of its machines and leverage its usage, consumption, and emissions data to enable smoother collaboration with Eiffage.

This voluntary approach meets the environmental monitoring and carbon footprint consolidation requirements of the project, as well as the data-sharing framework requested by Eiffage for the Penly site. It positions AC Excavator as an innovative player on the project.

Hiboo’s key capabilities

  • Simple and consistent connection of all machines, with automatic transmission of usage data
  • Centralization of consumption and emissions data in a single platform that is clear and actionable
  • Real-time sharing with Eiffage in a standardized format for environmental monitoring

Positive organizational developments

  • A unified process for connecting and sharing data
  • Simplified exchanges with Eiffage through a single access point
  • A data foundation ready for the site’s environmental reporting
AC Excavator is a Normandy-based company specializing in the rental of public works equipment with operators. It offers a wide range of machines from 6 to 50 tons, some equipped with 3D GPS guidance systems, for services such as earthworks, basin construction, grading, snow removal, and slope finishing.
